The cult success of SA will be previewed on DStv Box Office

The cult film of the genre Fried barry starring Gary Green, Chanelle De Jager, Johnny Pienaar, Bia Hartensen and Sean Cameron Michael will premiere on DStv Box Office in theaters on October 26, 2021 in the week leading up to Halloween. Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Steve Wall, Deon Lotz and Tuks Tad Lungu feature in supporting roles in the film, which is the first of its kind for South African cinema.

Fried barry marks Ryan Kruger’s directorial debut. Kruger is a famous director in the country, known for making music videos for some of South Africa’s biggest artists.

The film centers on Barry (Gary Green), a drug addict father and husband living in a middle class nightmare. After yet again, Barry returns home in the middle of the night and is teleported to an alien spaceship. He is subjected to unimaginable procedures and his body becomes possessed by an alien visitor.

The alien takes Barry’s body for a ride through the strangest and darkest avenues of Cape Town, South Africa. Along the way, he discovers the strange and ruthless world of humanity.

In the style of an LSD-injected road movie, Barry wanders from place to place, engaging in all manner of nonsense, from the whimsical to the deranged: smoking methamphetamine and going to a rave, being subjected to brutal torture and save the lives of a dozen children. The alien is forced to leave Earth when Barry’s body begins to deteriorate due to the abuse suffered during his intense journey. However, the alien returns to his ship not without taking Barry and those around him on a ride they will never forget.

The story of Fried barry began with a three-minute experimental short of the same name, released in 2019, which garnered over 100,000 views. The concept was simple: a pissed off heroin addict having fun in a warehouse after his last hit.

The simple concept and stylized execution earned the film 59 official selections and 13 awards at film festivals around the world. Plus, it sparked a wave of fan art. 100 artists have created their own vision of Fried barry character in forms as diverse as painting, sculpture, tattoos, digital and even animation.

The short film was injected with a harsh energy that surrounds the main character, Barry. Its intense performance is enhanced by harsh sound design flourishes and eye-catching editing. With a style that is not unlike that of Chris Cunningham, he captures the attention of the public and does not let go until the end. The film promises to take viewers on a similar high-energy, high-heart rate journey.

Fried barry was produced in association with the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa and is distributed by Gravel Road Distribution Group in Southern Africa.
