North American rights to Kazakh action comedy Honey you won’t believe it were picked up by 101 Films International as part of an agreement with Berlin-based sales company Media Move during pre-cannes screenings.
UK distributor 101 Films also owns the rights for the UK and Ireland, and the feature film has also been sold to Hamburg-based Lighthouse Home Entertainment for the German-speaking territories.
The film marks director Yernar Nurgaliyev’s international breakthrough and premiered at the Warsaw Film Festival before being screened in Sitges and at Tallinn’s Black Nights.
Produced by Kazakh company Art Dealers, the story centers on a man who embarks on a rural getaway with two friends after arguing with his wife. But a peaceful day of fishing turns into a series of mysterious and unfortunate events.
Media Move also sold the Finnish family adventure of Taavi Vartia Searchers of the Lost Yacht to Factoris Films for French-speaking territories and Estin Film for Estonia. The sales company said a deal was near for Dutch-speaking Europe.
Based on a novel by Väinö Riikkilä, the film will be released in Finland under the original title of Pertsa & Kilu by Nelonen Media on July 14, following a series of delays due to the pandemic.
