Kyle Erickson grew up in Ruso, North Dakota. He says the population was around six at the time.
After earning a degree in emergency management from NDSU, he traveled to Minot where he helped out at the ranch in his family’s hometown.
But, like many, 2020 has been an interesting year for him.
“Trying to do comedy in the middle of nowhere in the middle of a pandemic is really on the mark for me,” Erickson said. “So I’ve been doing it ever since. “
He has taken the stage about eight times since last year, including at Good night live, a late night comedy talk show in Minot.
He was born with cerebral palsy and says he uses some of his life experiences and sometimes bad luck to his advantage as it tends to create great punchlines.
“It might sound rude,” he said, “but my situation is pretty wacky. I try to make people laugh with me as much as possible because as soon as they can laugh… not so much at me… but laugh bad luck i hope they can look at their life and be like wow i can laugh at myself too if he can laugh at his business.
Erickson loves Minot. He particularly likes people. But if he wants to pursue the acting career he wants, he says it’s best to go to the Twin Cities.
“My plan is to go out there and hit the mics open and make so much noise, so to speak, until people have no choice but to be like, ‘hey , Who is this guy ? “”
According to Erickson, he likes to do things the hard way, but so far it’s been working pretty well.
“Bad things happen to me because I don’t really think about everything all the time,” he said with a chuckle. “But that’s okay because now, whenever something bad happens to me, I can write it into my phone and I can use it for my stand-up.”
And a sense of humor is nothing new for the 31-year-old.
“I always try to make people laugh,” Erickson said. “I’ve always been like that. So I guess nothing has really changed whether I have a microphone in my hand or not.
The comedy also opened up an opportunity on the Good Night Live editorial staff outside of its stand-up.
He will be taking the stage this weekend and eagerly awaiting the chance to make the audience laugh.
He said, “Don’t be afraid to laugh at me because I laugh at me all the time,” making Kyle Erickson a great choice for Someone you should know.
The Good Night Live show will take place this Saturday evening October 2 at the Mouse River Players in downtown Minot.
He also has an upcoming show at Bismarck at Pub 21 on October 23.
