Netflix is ​​looking to turn a former New Jersey Army base into a new production facility, the company told The Hill.

A Netflix spokesperson told The Hill in a statement that he plans to transform the Fort Monmouth military base into a “state-of-the-art production facility.”

Netflix’s plans were first reported by The New York Times, which reported the company would be bidding for a 289-acre portion of the base. The facility would include film sets, post-production buildings and backlot filming spaces.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) told The Times he was “excited to hear about the investment offered by Netflix.”

“While there is an objective process that all applicants will need to go through, it is further proof that the economic plan my administration has developed is working and creating high quality, well-paying jobs in our state,” Murphy said. . said to the newspaper.

The Fort Monmouth base was granted permanent status in 1925 and was used extensively to develop radar technology, including America’s first aircraft detection radar. The base was officially closed in 2011.

The site would be Netflix’s second-largest site behind its New Mexico studio, the Times noted.

Netflix first acquired the studio in 2018 and has pledged to spend $ 1 billion over a decade on the site. In November, Netflix announced it would spend an additional $ 1 billion to expand the studio.
