A new set of images for soon-to-be-released horror film Malignant by filmmaker James Wan marks his first return to horror filmmaking in 5 years.
New images of the next James Wan Smart reveal the first horror film from the acclaimed filmmaker since The Conjuring 2. Known to be the idea behind modern classic horror franchises such as Seen and Conspiracy, Wan has expanded into production in recent years and has focused his directorial strengths on the highly anticipated Aquaman 2. That being said, her number one love still seems to be horror.
Having given rise to a new era of horror in 2004 with Seen, Wan has been hailed as a breath of fresh air by many horror fans. The film used copious amounts of blood and brutality to complete its twisted premise of a serial killer who subjects his victims to agonizing games in which they fight for their survival. Made for just $ 1.2 million, Seen grossed over $ 100 million, more or less making a sequel a certainty. To date, there have been eight more entries into the highly lucrative franchise. But also impressive Saw beginnings and the building of the franchise that followed was, the arrival of Conspiracy in 2013 proved that Wan was no wonder. The real event-based supernatural thriller quickly became one of the highest-grossing horror films of all time, as did its 2016 sequel, which Wan also directed.
Yet despite Wan’s enormous success, the 44-year-old has been conspicuously absent from making anything of the horror genre since. The Conjuring 2. Luckily for fans of Wan’s unique vision to terrify his audiences, he’s back in the director’s chair – with a new film arriving in just a few weeks. Smart marks Wan’s ninth feature film and his seventh horror film, and thanks to Warner Bros., new images have arrived. As for the plot of the film, the official synopsis states, “Paralyzed by shocking visions of gruesome murders, Madison’s (Annabelle Wallis) torments escalate when she finds out that her daydreams are in fact terrifying realities.” Check out the images below:
While the footage doesn’t offer any of the sort of downright menacing demons or serial killers fans have come to expect from Wan, there does appear to be considerable tension. Each new image offers a different state of desperation for Madison, hinting at a film that gradually raises the stakes and the terror in the process. Also included are a few behind-the-scenes photos in which Wan can be seen overseeing the production. Smart Originally slated for release in August of last year, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the film has been pushed back to this year and will now be released on HBO Max on September 10.e.
It doesn’t matter what these new images are for Smart suggest, however, that the trailer for the film definitely raises the fear factor to new heights. With its mixture of psychological terror and strange otherworldly forces, Smart Looks a lot like the kind of movie fans have come to expect from Wan. After five years away from the director’s chair, it looks like Wan might just have another shot of horror on his hands.
