Pikes Ibiza has long been known for its mischievous mind and wry sense of humor, so what better place to host a stand-up comedy party than the unusual boutique hotel?
Yesterday evening – Friday July 16 – saw the second part of the Lust For Laughs, incredibly funny get started. The monthly series sees an eclectic lineup of international comedians take the stage. Here is the interior line …
Standing comedy is not something typically associated with the White Island and concerts are rare so the event was a bit of a treat on our events calendar!
From 9:00 p.m., guests began to crowd onto the iconic Pikes Ibiza tennis court, taking place on the same pink tarmac as the icon of the late queen Freddie Mercury used to enjoy a game during your stay at the rock ‘n’ roll hotel.
We were greeted with a crispy bubble glass event sponsors Gigglewater Prosecco, a nice touch that certainly added to the sense of occasion when we sat down. It must have been years since I attended a comedy concert, so I was looking forward to a night out. naughty jokes and distorted humor.
Hosted by Briton comedian James Regal, the evening’s programming included a international talent list including sassy Argentina Irene Meneguzzi, his compatriot Andres Fajngold, Kiwi John Allis and the headliner, Irishman Mike Rice.
At the opening of the show, our host James warned the audience that there would be strictly “no jokes about drugs“- because, apparently, the good people of Ibiza already know everything there is to know about this particular subject! However, other than that, literally no subject was off the table.
The first was Irene, who regaled audiences with the hardships of being a modern woman who just turned 40, with all that that entails: Botox, therapy, Tinder and emotionally traumatic trips to IKEA with potential future husbands.
Following, Andres, the dry comic as a bone we got stitches with her tongue-in-cheek, unhappy character. It took me a good ten minutes to figure out if he was actually acting – someone is giving the man an award for his acting skills!
After a short interval – and a quick recharge of Gigglewater, this time tasting the delicious rosé variety – it was New Zealander JohnIt’s time to take the microphone. He started well, but he risked losing the audience by insulting Italian pizza. I love a dark sense of humor, but we all have our limits!
Headliner Mike Rice delivered on uncompromising final of the night. After starting out relatively PC with Irish childhood stories, he turned to very controversial territory, visibly enjoying making audiences cringe.
From “kiss“the trout to the Virgin Mary, the Festival Fringe Performer really went for that – and I’m pretty sure the internet police would come and find me if I repeated some of their darker materials here.
Overall, our cheerful night and the comedic chaos at Pikes Ibiza was a breath of fresh air. For the faint hearted, it is better to avoid it, but if you like your humor a little bit naughty, it is a good evening with friends.
