High-flying comedy is coming to Hayes Valley

I laugh when I hit my knee. Rich cocktails and beer in plastic glasses. A single projector that puts the focus on the individual with a stealthy funky button behind the microphone.

This is what you expect from a night of stand-up comedy. Not Aviator Nation, a trendy beachwear sweatpants store. So why Dope comedy Would you like to launch a stand-up series at the brand’s Hayes Valley site later this month?

The casual wear business was founded in 2007 and quickly became a celebrity favorite. Their original store is in Venice Beach, and when I was a kid growing up in a private school in Los Angeles, I noticed that sweat was a “status symbol” of the preteen era. In fact, when I finally ordered my first pair earlier this year (working from home seems reasonable to spend over $ 100 on Confit) it confused my roommates and called out my best friend’s name from college. “Girl”, I was able to find it regularly on Aviator Nation. She is now an Instagram model for practicing yoga, writing poetry, and tropical travel, as expected. The 12 year old that I emailed finally felt like a cool kid, maybe the comedy show host wanted Absorb some of their splendor??

I called to answer this question Murahd shawki, actor, executive producer of Dope Show Comedy. He gave a more practical explanation. “We were looking to throw a show in Hayes Valley, and we were just checking out the neighborhood,” he says. “I saw Aviator Nation and what this decorative scene looks like with piano and drum kits, beautiful backgrounds, vinyl records and neon signs. We put on a lot of shows and soon it was perfect. I found it to be a layout. ”

The first performance of the Dope Show Comedy will be on July 31 at 8 p.m., the second on August 28, and As long as everything goes as planned, Can continue on the last Saturday of the month. The comedian, titled “Double Rainbow”, will perform on stage in the store, surrounded by colorful clothing from the loungewear brand. The comics make an inside joke in front of a crowd of 30 to 40 people, creating an intimate atmosphere, says Shawki. The lineup includes 6 local cartoons: Winners of the World Series of Comedy 2019 Ryan Bargain, San Francisco Punch Line Favorites Emily van dyck, Digi Comedy Festival Ryan sudakaran, Sci-Fi Sketch Festival Marcus williams And Sleni Weera Sekera, And Shawki himself.

Shawki usually puts on shows at comedy clubs all over town. Wednesday They are in San Francisco Track and Field Club, On Friday They are Emperor Norton’s Boozland, and Every other Saturday They are Mr. Bing..During the pandemic, they put on an outdoor show at the Auckland site and were one of the only sources of COVID-safe comedy. Nido’s garden And bar Oeste.. Several times he has introduced new customers to these locations and believes Aviator Nation will benefit as well. “Every time we do a show at Boozeland, the audience complains, ‘Wow that’s a good bar,’ so I think we’ve just created a new fan of the venue,” he says. “We are integrating very valuable demographic data. 25-35 people come to our show.

However, the biggest attraction of the show has nothing to do with the venue. On the contrary, it is worth your money. Comedy fans can buy tickets to see just one of the comedians he brought on stage, but at the Dope Show you can see multiple trending cartoons on the same night. “We see six rising cartoons on our show, all with a tight 10 to 15 minute set,” says Shawki.

It is also useful to have a bar next door – Salon Noir.. There, customers can find a nice bathroom for eating, ordering drinks and missing half of the shows that are waiting in line. Oh, the fun of comedy …

The partnership between Aviator Nation and Dope Show Comedy may seem like an odd collaboration at first glance. But at first glance, this is not a sacrificial act. Rather, it’s an overhaul of the comedy club scene, an example of a kind of flexibility with which Shoki’s cast has been able to survive a pandemic. If all goes well, the new arrangement will likely take dope comedy to new heights.

Aviator Nation declined to comment.
