A Quiet Place, Part II

A Quiet Place, Part II had a lot to do after the original’s surprise success. With such a strong shadow cast by the first film, it’s truly an accomplishment that the sequel was able to extend the reach of the premise while still retaining the spirit and voice of the original. Following a flashback to the arrival of aliens on Earth, the film picks up where the first left off, with the Abbott family mourning the loss of their patriarch and in search of a new refuge.

The Seen Movies might not be everyone’s genre of films, but there’s no denying their cultural impact on the horror genre, ushering in a new era of gore and exploitation films. The franchise has a certain reputation for its overblown nature, which leads Saw II to be surprisingly underrated as a result. When Jigsaw traps a group of ex-inmates and the son of a police officer in a trap house, the police are forced to stand there and watch the horror unfold and Jigsaw’s background is further revealed. The film not only delivers the franchise’s expected gore, but its thriller elements shouldn’t be ignored, as they build up tension throughout the story.

The Exorcist III

the exorcist 3

After the disappointment that was The Exorcist II: The heretic, some may be reluctant to continue with the franchise and verify The Exorcist III. However, skipping this episode is a mistake. The Exorcist III was written and directed by William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original novel The Exorcist was based on. Detective story part similar to Zodiac and partly demonic possession, the film connects to the original film and (rightly) skips the first sequel. A police detective links the death of Father Karras to recent murders that resemble that of a serial killer known as the “Gemini Killer”, who was sentenced to death 15 years earlier. The film is full of mystery and fear and makes a great addition to any spooky season lineup.

Scooby-Doo II: Unleashed Monsters

Scooby-Doo II: Unleashed Monsters

While at first glance, Scooby-Doo 2: Unleashed Monsters may seem a bit of an unorthodox choice for a list of great horror sequels, it actually strikes a fun balance between the other selections. It meets the criteria of widening the reach of its predecessor while retaining all the definitive features that made the original so great. The Mystery Gang takes on a series of their former enemies and their damaged reputation in Coolsville in this sequel written by James Gunn. The film at the time was a bit of a disappointment, but it has gained continued fan support over the years and is worth revisiting.
