There comes a time when someone thinks of such a simple and amazing idea for a movie that you have to blame yourself for not writing it. Weird is one of those movies and ideas. Horrible friday except they switch bodies with a serial killer, instead of Jamie lee curtis. I saw the trailer last year around this time, and it caught my eye. He did more than that. I am a big fan of Vince vaughn and the idea of him playing a serial killer again (after his best part of the movie as Norman Bates in the pointless remake of psychopath) was enticing. Add to that, he will also play his normal comedic character as a teenage girl in the body of a serial killer, I knew I had to see him.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t catch it in theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year’s schedule around the Friday the 13th release in November 2020 was also incredibly busy. So it came and went through VOD / Digital. Enter HBO Max.
Weird is now available to watch on HBO Max and thank goodness.
For horror movies, streaming could be the final new frontier (check out our friends at Bloody disgusting talk about the future of streaming with horror here). So when I needed a movie to watch recently, guess which one I picked?
Unique kills, future stars and great writing
Without going into a full review or spoilers, Weird had a lot of unique and inventive kills that this horror dog had never seen before. You have a few of them in the opening scene and then they continue until the end of the movie. For a movie released in 2020, getting so many unique ways to kill people is a testament to the writing and creative team behind the film. Writers Michael kennedy and Christophe Landon (also director) put the horror body and soul in this film. It follows the general “rules” of horror, but in Scream-in the same way, it changes the rules and also exposes those rules to the public. It’s not just a horror movie, it’s a laughing matter, there are also a lot of heartwarming moments throughout.
Aside from Vince Vaughn, the cast also Catherine newton (future Ant-Man: Quantumania star) like our leader, Millie. This also has Celeste O’Connor like Nyla, Micha Ocherovich like Josh, Dana drori like Char, and Katie finneran like Coral Kessler. The cast takes normal horror “archetypes” and sticks to some of the things you’d expect and throws out other more archaic horror concepts out the window. In this way, Weird is one of the most progressive horror films released in the past two years.
Take the Blu-Ray, HBO Max or rental, you have no excuse not to watch this movie
In the same vein as movies like The babysitter and it’s the continuation The killer queen, Ready or Not, and Werewolves inside, Weird captures that perfect point between scares and comedy. It’s a simple and fun movie. At the end of the day for this long Halloween season, you don’t always need bloodbaths with dark, brooding characters where no one lives at the end. Weird is one of those entertaining movies, and now you have the perfect way to watch it on HBO Max.
I have to say “shame on me” for not watching this movie sooner. Blame 2020, but the deed is done. Weird made my list of favorite horror movies of the past two years. If I could go back I would add it to my Best of 2020 list. It was so fun. Through it all, you really have no excuse now to watch the movie. So subscribe to HBO Max, pick up the Blu-ray, or find it wherever you rent movies. It will be well worth your hour and a half.
