France, Spain Total 2021 Box Office

Galvanized in part by the spectacular year-end figures for “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, the box office has jumped this year by 47.2% and 45% respectively in France and Spain compared to 2020, Comscore announced Thursday.

The annual figure of cinema admissions in France was 96 million ticket sales, compared to 65.2 million in 2020. In Spain, the box office reached 41 million cinema tickets sold in 2021, or 251 million. euros ($ 283.63 million) in gross revenue. (The French national film and television agency CNC and Comcast report only ticket sales, not box office receipts.)

The overall 2021 box office in France and Spain, however, remains pale compared to the pre-pandemic years. France recorded 213.2 million admissions in 2019 in a big year for the international box office and 201.2 million in 2018.

Spain in 2021 was down 58% from the 2015-19 average, said David Rodriguez, Comscore’s general manager for Spain and Portugal.

In a complex year for the cinema, multiple factors seem to have shaped the overall box office results: the length and scale of the cinema threaten closures; the arcs of truly blue Hollywood blockbusters; the strength of local industries; and the negative effect of attendance restrictions.

Cinemas in France were closed this year until May 18. Once opened, as the CNC pointed out on Thursday, admissions fell only 23.2% compared to 2019, which was the second most important year at the box office in France since 1965. But the cinema picked up a steady pace. hit with the introduction of a health pass from July 21.

In Spain, due to capacity restrictions, only 59% of cinemas operated in the first half of the year.

Bowing on December 15 in France, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” helped push global cinema above December 15-28 to 11.7 million, tied with 2018 (11.6 million) and 2018 (12 million), according to Comcast. In Spain, the release of “Spider-Man” saw the box office climb to pre-pandemic levels for the first time since Spanish cinemas opened in June 2000, with an extended debut weekend of $ 9 million. euros ($ 10.17 million) from December 16 to 19. .

French films have a market share of 40.8%. Spain didn’t have a blockbuster like 2019’s “Father There Is Only 2” directed by Santiago Segura. But Segura once again delighted exhibitors, releasing “The Kids Are Alright” in 2021 and the Spanish films box office showed more depth.

“It is true that the recovery has been slower than expected, as has been the case in any other sector, but given the positive trend we had in December accompanied by the release of attractive titles, we see that viewers are coming back to movie theaters. ”Rodríguez said of Spain.
